History of St. Paul's


St. Paul's Lutheran Church has a rich history.  The church was formed in 1885 by a group of Christians of the Lutheran faith who wished to form a congregation on the west side of Medford.  The first worship service was held June 27, 1885 in the German language.  The first church building was constructed in the fall of 1885 and was located just west of Medford.



Other notable events in St. Paul's history:

  •  1890  -  The second church building is constructed at the present site on North Park Avenue
  •  1895  -  A storm destroys the church tower and bell
  •  1912  -  First worship services held in the English language
  •  1926  -  Built a new parish hall
  •  1938  -  Hammond electric organ purchased
  •  1943  -  First Vacation Bible School at St. Paul's
  •  1947  -  Church damaged by a fire
  •  1959  -  St. Paul's Lutheran Women group was organized
  •  1965  -  Construction of the third and present church building
  •  1982  -  Membership exceeds 500 baptized members
  •  1988  -  The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) is founded through a merger of three Lutheran Church bodies:  ALC, LCA, AEL
  •  2006  -  The parsonage is sold and moved off the church property.  Allowing the area needed for the church addition and parking lot to be constructed in 2010.
  •  2007  -  Membership exceeds 700 baptized members
  •  2009  -  Membership exceeds 900 baptized members
  •  2010  -  18 month partnership with Fortune Lake Lutheran Camp in Crystal Falls, MI
  •  2011  -  Membership exceeds 1,000 baptized members, completion of a building addition to improve accessibility and increase space

2010 marked the 125 years of ministry for St. Paul's!  On October 10, 2010, St. Paul's celebrated this historical year with festive worship services, a fun parade, and a wonderful meal!  The entire congregation and community was invited.  Others in attendance included: Bishop Duane Pederson - NW Synod of WI, former St. Paul's pastor Roy Williams, current member pastor Loretta Kuse, plus many more!  


God has truly blessed St. Paul's and its growing ministries!
